A Lesson On Setting Poetry To Music, With Robin’s Former Choir Director

Robin's former choir director, Ron Cohen, stopped by our studios at WBUR in Boston. (Jesse Costa/Here & Now)

Our favorite choir director, Ron Cohen, formerly of Robin Young’s alma mater John F. Kennedy High School in Plainview Long Island, stopped by our studios to bring us musical selections that illuminate works by writers like Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, and Frederich Schiller.

As he tells Robin Young, these are all pieces where listeners need to pay as much attention to the words as the music.

Ron Cohen’s Picks

  • Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Schwartz “A Simple Song” performed by Peter Hofman along with Michael Tilson Thomas and the Los Angeles Philharmonic
  • Norman Della Jollo “A Jubilant Song” (based on Walt Whitman’s “A Song of Joys”) performed by the Ron Cohen and the John F. Kennedy Choir
  • Randall Thompson “Choose Something Like a Star” (based on a poem by Robert Frost) performed by the S. Talbot Thayer and the Calhoun Choir.
  • Ludwig van Beethoven “Symphony #9 in D Minor, Op. 125 ‘Choral’ IV. Presto” (based on the “Ode to Joy” by Frederich Schiller ) performed by Christoph von Dohnanyi and the Cleveland Orchestra, with Janice Taylor, Carol Vaness, and Siegried Jerusalem.

  • Ron Cohen, Robin’s former Choir Director at JFK High School in Plainview Long Island, New York

Ron’s segment was great once again.  I’ve known him my entire life, but he opens my eyes  about music a little more with each broadcast.

    • Parrotmom

Idskid, athough I have known Ron slightly for over 55 years, it’s only within the past few years I’ve been able to appreciate his love for music and choir.  His enthusiasm is and desire to make you understand is contagious. Only wish I had the opportunity to be a student in his classes and to learn to appreciate more.  Teachers like Ron are few and should be treasured.

  • Larrycalkins

How does one get a copy of these songs

    • Jryan Bur

Hi Larrycalkins, Thanks for your interest. The list of the songs is above. Since many that we played are recordings of high school groups, copies of the songs are hard to come by — but you could find the songs recorded by other groups on YouTube most likely. Â
      Thanks,
      Jill

My dear friend, colleague, and mentor does it again. What a wonderful program to celebrate “… the marriage of text and music.” Bravo!!
Thank you Robin for bringing Ron’s passion and love of the choral art
    to the world community.

Robin and Ron, you’ve done it again!  It’s amazing how much these segments make us look at music a little differently or give us some insight into things we just take for granted.  I can honestly say that it is often the melody of a piece of music or the wonderful harmonies that first catch my attention — not the words.  When you take the time to read the words and then listen to how the music captures those words in song, it often gives you a more complete appreciation of the whole work.  I love hearing these segments with Ron.  Please keep them coming!

What a pleasure to hear another segment with Ron!  His knowledge and his love of music are wonderful.  What’s his next topic?

  • Lynnen1

Ron Cohen is an inspiration as an educator , musician and conductor. Mr. Cohen has once again contributed an inspired account of vocal music. Thank-you Robin Young for creating a forum on your radio station to educate and inspire. Mr.Cohen has a beautiful, passionate manner in sharing his love for music. I so look forward to future radio shows with Mr. Cohen. Lynnen Yakes

Mr. Cohen captures the enthusiasm and beauty of vocal music, choral music, and what it means to be alive.    I am honored to continue Ron’s legacy at Plainivew-Kennedy High School on Long Island.  Thanks again Ron for reminding us all how music can touch our hearts, excite us, and can bring us all together!

Wow!  I’m a member of The Keene Chorale and for our recent concert we featured three of the four pieces Ron highlighted.  I got tears in my eyes.

I met Ron on the train to Boston last saturday, and in that short 20 minute ride into town, Ron got through to me deeper than almost anyone has in my life. I’m only 15, and haven’t even begun to figure out the rest of my life yet, although I’m convinced the advice Ron gave me will stick with me and continue to influence me throughout the rest of my life. Among the many things he told me one phrase hit me harder than others. He told me that if you don’t love what you do, what’s the point. He then went on to tell me that later in life every couple years I should take a walk and that during this walk I should re-evaluate myself, and if not content with my life I should “make a change.” I could see this idea of making a change was central to everything Ron was telling me. Ron got through to me in a way that is impossible to show through this short comment. In that short twenty minute train ride, (not to be cliche) but I feel that he changed my life. After we parted ways at North Station I thought to myself that this was a man who truly loved teaching. He met a complete stranger on a train and during that short train ride was able to change his life for the better. Few people have that gift, and even fewer know that they do. Ron both posses it and uses it to truly help the community. Thank you Ron for the advice you gave to me and truly for changing my life both in the present and hopefully the future.

Ron makes you listen  and understand not only the melody but the composers true fellings and aspirations

Thank you Ms Robin for having Mr. Cohen as your guest.  He always makes me feel so young and “educated”  and that there are songs to be sung.  He makes me appreciate music in a way that I have not done so in my earlier years.   What the world needs now is lots of Mr. Cohen spreading his  love of vocal and choral music to calm the unrest.

  • Iingraham

Beautiful music from a guy with an ugly colon!
Seriously – Ron, you’re a very engaging radio commentator.  You blend elegance and enthusiasm nicely.

  • Lhbrass

Poetry and music.. the power of both..  listen.. learn.. grow and enjoy every moment.  The selection of material was outstanding, but the fire and enthusiasm that Mr. Cohen brings both poetry and music to life.   Ron loves what he does and it’s hard not to catch his passion.  His emphasis on listening with heart as well as with ears touches me whenever I hear him speak.  Thanks for a wonderful presentation.  Encouragement.. Wow.  What a concept.    Sincerely, Len Brass

the passion that Mr Ron Cohen has for music, make me want to find my real passion in life, i hope one day to set foot in Italy, to visit Florence, Rome, Venice, that  is a good dream to have, all the best, thanks

  • Philjoe101

the eloquence of the music in this piece is only matched by the enthusiasm and joy received by Ron who acts as a great role model for aspiring teachers like myself. Godspeed and hope to see you again soon.

To crave optimism, hope, and uplift in this crazy world, in this “warm” (read: hot) weather, and to get it, one need only find Ron Cohen speaking with Robin Young about music and text perfectly blended to bring beauty to the world and to our souls.  What could be better than that?  Thank you both for the joy, for the “encouragement,” for the discussion, for the lesson, and for the music.

This was awesome we need more people like Mr. Cohen.

Very nice interview.  Mr. Cohen demonstrates the importance of music, words and how to observe  listen and read music and poetry… Shows us the passion for words and lyrics…

I had the pleasure of serving Ron and his mother at the restaurant I work at, he is an inspirational cat who radiates positive energy and has a great outlook on the world. I am a big believer in the collective conscious, that being the truths that are kind of just known to everyone, the obvious morality and positive energy that we all love to be in the presence of… I regard this as spirituality and ultimately, God. Although that may be a rather intense thing to say, I will let the readers of this comment know that I was effected by my interaction with Mr. Cohen and it seems like I am not the only one, he is comfortable tapping into that collective conscious and proving to you right off the bat that he is your friend and is willing to offer a friendly word of advice. I will be traveling as much as possible and ultimately trying to make a return to comedy which is my passion. My interaction with this man and the influence he had on me, literally pushed me in a productive direction and I have since taken a few proactive steps forward to set my plan in motion and I wanted to take a second to speak about this on this little discussion board because without meeting Mr. Cohen, who know how long my gunshyness would have continued.

In keeping with our timely Olympics mindset, “just when you think the bar is at the highest height possible, someone comes by and raises it – yet again!”  And the gold medal winners are . . . the Awesome “here & now” Host Robin Young and her guest, music educator (and in my opinion – Expert) Ron Cohen.  After reading and agreeing with fellow listeners’ comments, it’s obvious that Mr. Cohen has truly inspiring talents – not only in re-teaching others how to listen to and appreciate music from different perspectives, but also in helping others reflect on and improve their lives.  I am also a lucky recipient of Ron’s tutelage, and my only hope is that this is but another of MANY MORE future segments with this Dvnamic Duo of Robin Young and Ron Cohen – BRAVO !!!

I met Ron today at Jordan’s Furniture and he spoke to me and my friend Giulio. Not only did I have the pleasure to meet him but I also met his dear mother who was very patient with the  three of us. Ron’s words got to me in a way no one else has before. He inspired me to do what I love no matter what. What a wise and wonderful man. Thank  you so much, Ron.

Tonight we met Ron at the Cheesecake Factory while at dinner. His engaging conversation and kind-heartedness to two strangers encouraged us to make a difference in the world. He told us to “agree to disagree without being disagreeable”…some advice that we will take to heart.  Along with some good advice he also treated us to some cheesecake! A night we will never forget, that’s for sure! Thanks again Ron!
