Defense Secretary Ash Carter has confirmed that the 12 U.S. Marines who were on board two helicopters that crashed off Hawaii last week are dead. He paid tribute to them yesterday, a day after the maritime search was suspended.

An around-the-clock effort by the Coast Guard, Navy and Marines ended unsuccessfully, and the operation has been switched to a “recovery and salvage” mission. A memorial service is being planned for later this week.

Here & Now’s Jeremy Hobson talks with Wyatt Olson in Hawaii, who has been covering the story for the Stars and Stripes newspaper.
