Hurricane Isaac hit the shore early Wednesday with winds at 80 miles per hour. It then stalled for several hours with high gusts and horizontal rain before resuming its slow journey inland, and that pace has Gulf coast officials and residents worried.
Hurricane Katrina survivor Bonnie Chortler of Waveland, Miss. told the AP, “A slow storm can cause a lot more havoc, a lot more long-term power outage, ’cause it can knock down just virtually everything if it just hovers forever.” Coastal officials say until the storm moves on, the high water from the storm surge can’t move back out. The lingering storm is putting pressure on levees and emergency response systems all along the Gulf coast.
