Afghanistan Racked By Violence Again

Suicide bombers killed more than two dozen people in Nimorz Province Tuesday, targeting a bazaar where people were waiting to celebrate the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

These attacks follow a recent spate of what is called “green on blue violence” in the country. At least seven American servicemen have been killed in the last week either by men they are training or men dressed in green Afghan uniforms. The Taliban is claiming responsibility for some of these incidents, but U.S. officials say that can’t be verified.

So far this year, more than 30 NATO troops have been killed in attacks connected to Afghan security forces and according to the New America Foundation, only one other year, 2011, has had more of these attacks.

The term “green on blue” has nothing to do with uniform colors. The US Army uniforms in Afghanistan are a mix of green and two different shades of brown.  The Marines are similar, but also have a tan uniform that has no green at all. The Afghan security forces have several uniforms (Afghan National Army, Afghan Civil Order Police, Afghan National Police, etc) some of which are actually blue. The term is a reference to map symbols. Friendly/allied forces are marked in green, US forces are marked in blue, enemy forces are marked in red, etc. Green on blue means that a unit that was catagorized as friendly (green) attacked a US unit (blue).

“These attacks follow a recent spate of what is called “green on blue violence” in the country. At least seven American servicemen have been killed in the last week either by men they are training or men dressed in green Afghan uniforms. (Blue is the color of the NATO force’s uniforms.) ”

In all the years of US at war in Afghanistan you’ve never seen a picture of a soldier in his uniform?  No, US and other UN troops do not wear blue uniforms!  Green vs. Blue usually refers to military vs. police forces.
