Music For Kids — Beyond The Wiggles

Are you a parent who has had enough of the Wiggles and other kiddie music? We’re going to talk later this week with a dad who got his son to love indie rock. What music do you and your kids enjoy together?

Tell us on our Facebook page or in the comments section.

I don’t know exactly when my father got me to appreciate blues and rock, but it must have been pretty early.  When I was in preschool, I refused to dance to Puff the Magic Dragon out of shyness, so the teacher suggested that I bring in some music that I liked.  The next day I walked in with the album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs by Eric Clapton’s band Derek and the Dominos featuring Duane Allman.  The title song was on track thirteen and was my favorite song in the world, and still is now twenty years later.

Anything by Roger Day. When my kids were little, I absolutely had to find music the whole family could enjoy together. Roger Day’s music is smart, funny, educational and I dare say…hip? With backing vocals from The Indigo Girls and Nanci Griffith, you can’t go wrong.

The Zinghoppers. Imagine Barney meets the Black Eyed Peas!

My kids also love the Zinghoppers. We live in Nashville.

LOL – hi Heather, I just saw this too ROTFLOL. Gotta give props to the Zinghoppers, they are changing the game in kids music. Hip hop and disco dance type music that my kiddos love and I don’t hate.

PS – It doesn’t hurt that the lead singer Jack is pretty cute!

Definitely don’t like the Wiggles anymore. They were mean to their old lead singer Sam. My kids like Yo Gabba Gabba and also a new band called the Zinghoppers. They are really goofy and nice people.

    We love the Zinghoppers!

    Another vote for the Zinghoppers!!

The first time I ever saw the Zinghoppers was at a small library in Pensacola. My two year old was throwing a fit and we were late to the show. In fact, we only saw one song! They were so kind, they did a “mini-concert” singing three or four songs for us out in the parking lot, because they didn’t want to disappoint us. We have been fans for life ever since!! :) :) – Tammi Marier

Roger Day! His music is smart, funny and engaging. The whole family enjoys his songs. We have seen him in concert several times at local libraries and once at our school. Roger Day is the best! If you ever get the chance to see him perform, you must go!

My kids and I like to sing the usual kids’ songs like “Wheels on the Bus go Round and Round” but we get creative and change the words to make them more fun.
