The Writer Behind Songs From Beyonce’s ‘Halo,’ To Adele’s ‘Rumour Has It’

Listen

Singer-songwriter Ryan Tedder has written or co-written a raft of hit songs including Beyonce’s “Halo,” Adele’s “Rumour Has It” and Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love.”

Tedder’s song-writing career took off after hitting an early roadblock: he had tried to succeed as a solo artist but was dropped from a record label, forcing him to realize that he was “not Justin Timberlake.”

So he decided to create his own band and in 2004 he called Zach Filkins, one of his high school friends and together they formed what is now OneRepublic.

Tedder’s “Apologize” was the first song he wrote for the group and he remembers feeling good about it early on.

“I’ve never written a hit in my life, but man I swear this feels like it could be the biggest song ever,” Tedder recounted for Here & Now‘s Robin Young.

Tedder’s hunch happened to be spot on — “Apologize” dominated the airwaves and went multi-platinum around the world.

So how does this unknown yet powerful songwriter gauge whether a song is a hit?

“The thing that I can connect with is emotion, so if the hair on the back of my neck or my arms is standing up, and I can tell that everyone else in the room is having the same effect, that’s kind of my gauge,” he said.

While he may not be a household name, he’s well known in the music industry.

Tedder explains how he met Adele at an awards ceremony:

“She was like, ‘You’re Ryan Tedder,’ and I was like, ‘Yes I am.’ And she said, ‘I’m about to start writing for my new album, you are the first person that I wanted to co-write with.’”

And with that, Tedder ended up co-writing two of Adele’s hits from her latest album, “Rumor Has It” and “Turning Tables.”

Thanks for the mega dose of modesty Mr. Tedder…”…feels like it could be the biggest song ever.” Jeez…What would the world be like without undeserving over produced wanna-bes like you.

Is the arts/news cycle in late July this slow? Doesn’t this man’s music sound like a rehash of all the other rock-pop pablum out there? Does this man’s publicist date someone at PRI? Is this a case of who you know rather than what you know? Why am I listening to this proselytizing egomaniac? (Click).  Oh, that’s right, I’m not listening any more.  Never mind.

I am happy to hear a successful Christian songwriter talk about his work.  I am very tuned in to this interview.

Actually, U2′s ‘Joshua Tree’ was mostly inspired by the cult-classic 1984 movie, ‘Paris, Texas.’

  • NYCeveryday

LOVED this interview, I agree w NPR fan- I thought mr Tedder’s thoughts about faith and songwriting in music were very honest and revealing, u2 was and is a defining act or me, and I happen to love most of the hits Tedder wrote that were mentioned during this (his Adele songs happen to be my favorite on her album). Not sure about the comments below did that guy actually use the word “pablum” in describing Ryans songs? A) no normal person uses the word “pablum” unless they are trying to prove some type of grammatical elitism and B) have you heard Adeles album or his songs? She might be the most critically acclaimed, top selling “legit” artist of the last decade- not bad for a guy “rehashing pop-rock pablum”. Get a life. Or at least get new ears.

you wouldn’t be Mr. Tedder…would you?

Loved hearing this piece. Always fun to learn about the stories behind the music and the artists.

I thought Evan Bogart of The Writing Camp wrote “Halo”? I suppose they were co-writers. That probably should have been mentioned.

He went to Oral Roberts University? That is almost as disgusting as his bland and corny  songwriting.

Robin Young was once the head of the Davy Jones fan club (back in his pre-Monkees, Broadway days). We had him on the show back in 2007, when she revealed their first meeting.
