Ireland’s Rift With Vatican Deepens

Catholics in Ireland are waiting to see just how deep the rift with the Vatican is going to get.

Rome has called back the Pope’s envoy to Dublin after the release of the Cloyne Report, which detailed allegations of child sex abuse against 19 priests from 1996 to 2009. Most allegations were not passed on to the police.

The move comes after last week’s hard-hitting speech from Irish Prime Minister Edna Kenny. Kenny condemned the Vatican for not reporting allegations of abuse as recently as three years ago, even as the church claimed there would never be another cover up.
