A Look At Cargo Security As Al-Qaida Promises New Attacks

Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula is threatening to launch a series of small attacks, similar to the failed plot in late October, when two bombs from Yemen were found on cargo planes bound for the U.S. In the group’s English language magazine, “Inspire,” al-Qaida says the plot was a “bargain” that cost them just over $4,000, yet cost the West billions in new security measures.  Doug Laird, president of the aviation security consulting group Laird & Associates, explains how cargo is screened and discusses whether our security measures are tough enough.

As long as all passengers are being invasively screened and most cargo isn’t, our so-called “security” is no more than the equivalent of only looking for your fallen keys near the lamppost because the light is better over there.

Laurie..just to be clear (and you may have heard this) all cargo on passenger planes is screened.

Cargo on cargo planes is not. Of course, a cargo plane
getting into trouble is still very serious!!

The cargo company won’t be paying more for security…the consumer will be pay more. As with all costs to a business, the costs are passed on to the consumer.

Why can’t shippers use the large format scanners that were to be used for semi trucks? Drive the truck of cargo through a scanner before it is loaded on a plane. Weren’t these commercially-sized backscatter scanners supposed to be the next big thing for cargo security?
