A portrait of Dickens at age 29, painted during his 1842 American trip by Boston artist Francis Alexander. It’s on loan to the UMass Lowell exhibit from the MFA where it hasn’t been seen in 30 years. “People think of Dickens as that old guy with the beard that’s not relevant. And he is relevant! In fact, I think of him as sort of like Jon Stewart, he uses wit,” said Diana Archibald, a Dickens scholar. Dickens was born 200 years ago, we look back on his trip to the famous mills of Lowell, Massachusetts in 1842.

When it comes to college applications, some Asian-Americans are purposely not checking the race box. For many, it has nothing to do with their heritage, and everything to do with the high expectations that come with it.
